Verity Systems introduces Fujitsu's MagEraSURE™ HDD degausser

Mag EraSURE ME-P3E is an ideal solution for industries who have a requirement for erasing and destroying data that is of paramount importance whether it be stored on 2.5” or 3.5” hard disk drives, removable disks or backup tapes. Typical markets with highly sensitive and confidential information include the financial, medical, education, government and legal arenas.

The Fujitsu Mag EraSURE utilizes a rare earth permanent magnet to erase magnetically recorded information. Data becomes permanently unrecoverable by commercial means once exposed to the powerful magnet in the device. In addition to purging recorded information on the storage device, including servo and calibration data, the degausser also destroys most read/write heads. This process can either be done through an electronic one button approach or in the case of a power failure a crank is supplied with the ME-P3E for manual operation. The unit is supplied on a trolley for convenient use and storage when not in use.

About Erasing:
Data is stored in magnetic media, such as hard drives, floppy disks and magnetic tape. This is achieved by very small areas on the data surface called magnetic domains which change their magnetic alignment to be in the direction of an applied magnetic field. Degaussing, commonly called erasure, leaves the domains in random patterns with no preference to orientation, thereby rendering previous data unrecoverable. There are some domains whose magnetic alignment is not randomized after degaussing and the information that these domains represent is commonly called magnetic remanence. Proper degaussing will ensure that there is insufficient magnetic remanence to reconstruct the data. Fujitsu’s MagErasure ME-P3/P3E is a device that can generate a magnetic field for degaussing magnetic storage media.
